Investing in the Next Generation: The NILE Merit Heifer Program
Agriculture doesn't have a future without the next generation—and the NILE Merit Heifer Program is helping make sure that future is strong.
The program was created to help young people get their start in the beef cattle business by providing deserving 4-H and FFA members with an opportunity to receive a heifer and learn firsthand what it takes to raise and manage a breeding animal.
Applicants between the ages of 12 and 16 are evaluated based on their merit, future goals, and ability to care for the animal. The program is designed to be much more than simply receiving a heifer. Participants take responsibility for raising the animal, arranging for her to be bred, maintaining records, and bringing her back to the NILE the following year as a bred replacement heifer.
At the successful completion of the program, the participant takes full ownership of the heifer, giving them an important foundation for starting their own cattle herd.
That's what makes this program so special.
It's a hands-on agricultural education opportunity, a responsibility-building experience, and a real investment in the future of the cattle industry.

Keep Livestock Drinking with the Water Rippler
Another innovation you'll want to see at the NILE is the Water Rippler.
When winter hits, keeping livestock water available and ice-free can become a daily chore—and traditional tank heaters can consume significant amounts of electricity.
The Water Rippler takes a different approach.
Rather than heating the entire tank of water, the Water Rippler uses a 50-watt, 12-volt DC pump to continuously agitate the water and help slow ice formation.
On the electric Water Rippler, a converter to 12 volts is included. A solar option is also available, making the system flexible for a variety of livestock watering setups. With its low power consumption (97% more efficient than tank heaters - around $0.20 verses $6+ per day), the Water Rippler is designed to provide an efficient way to keep water moving through cold weather.
